Why Level 4 Matters

Of all the IDDSI levels, Level 4 (Pureed) is the texture most frequently prescribed in care homes and hospitals.

Precise Definition: Level 4 food must be completely smooth and homogeneous, free of any solid particles, fibres, seeds, or skins. No chewing should be required. It must be eaten with a spoon and hold its shape.

Test Methods: The fork drip test (Level 4 food does not flow through the fork tines), the spoon tilt test (it slides off slowly), and the finger test.

Common Compliance Issues: Solid particles present, uneven texture, too thin or too thick, syneresis (water separating out). Solutions include blending in a high-speed blender for at least 2 minutes, passing through a fine sieve, following the dosage chart strictly, and using SeniorDeli Food Gellant.

For Caregivers Preparing Level 4 at Home: Invest in a good blender, get into the habit of testing every batch, and keep a fine sieve on hand.
