Thickener Powder Guide: From Beginner to Expert
Why Thickener Powder Matters
For people with dysphagia, normal thin liquids flow through the mouth too quickly — the throat muscles and nerves cannot mount a protective response in time, and the liquid may enter the airway. Thickener powder increases the viscosity of liquids, slowing them down so the patient has enough time to swallow safely.
Studies show that the appropriate use of thickener powder can reduce aspiration risk in people with dysphagia by 50% to 80%.
What Makes SeniorDeli Clear Thickener Different
SeniorDeli Clear Thickener is built on a xanthan gum base: it is transparent and colourless so the drink looks unchanged; it is flavour-neutral so taste is unaffected; the consistency stays stable and does not over-thicken over time; it requires less powder per serve; it works in both hot and cold drinks; and it dissolves in 30 seconds.
Step-by-Step Mixing
Step 1 — Measure the liquid: Use a measuring cup to portion out the drink accurately.
Step 2 — Measure the thickener: For SeniorDeli Clear Thickener, per 100 ml of liquid: Level 1 (Slightly Thick) 1.0 g; Level 2 (Mildly Thick) 1.5 g; Level 3 (Moderately Thick) 2.5 g; Level 4 (Extremely Thick) 4.0 g.
Step 3 — Add and stir: Add the thickener to the liquid all at once and immediately stir vigorously with a fork or whisk for about 30 seconds.
Step 4 — Wait to set: Water, tea, juice 1 to 2 minutes; milk and soy milk about 5 minutes; nutritional milk drinks about 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 5 — Test and confirm: Use the IDDSI fork drip test to verify the consistency.
Storage and Safety
Thickened drinks should be consumed as soon as possible. They keep at room temperature for about 4 hours and refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
